Moonset, Monaco
This was a painting I created from the back balcony of M-Base. The Moon Sets in the West. The Palace walls illuminated like Pinocchio's Village at Disneyland.

Papa Duke
Ellis Eringer, the late father of Robert Eringer, lived in Monaco. One of his gifts was to paint portraits, from memory, of Padre Pio. His paintings of Padre Pio were sought by collectors world wide, because they had healing powers.
Up on "The Rock" in Monaco is the Cathedral of Monaco. A special alcove is dedicated to Padre Pio, and Ellis' Painting is the center piece. One day while I was in Monaco I entered Ellis' studio where he was busy painting one of his portraits. He agreed to allow me to capture his portrait while at work on his painting.

Lightning Strike, Monaco
Arriving in Monaco to M-Base; it was Mid-Winter, and we were off on another one of our journey's to investigate the line separating Creativity and Madness.
A large thunder storm moved into the Principality so I grabbed my easel and set up to paint. Right on Que the lightning flashed, and I captured it in paint.

Monaco Ritz
I met ROBERT ERINGER over nine years ago at a Gallery in SANTA BARBARA.
After seeing my plein air Nocturnes, he made the opportunity available to me, to paint the purist of night sky's, in ICELAND! That journey evolved into a six year Odyssey; in search of Creativity and Madness.
Many of our journeys unfolded in a Surreal fashion. One of the Surreal locations we'd visit was Monaco. (It was three years before I knew what Eringer was doing there). Well, he would have his secret meetings, and I would go off to paint.
In the six years of our SURREAL BOUNCE ODYSSEY I produced 120 paintings during our jaunts. This particular painting, which I titled "Monaco Ritz", was painted under the full moon, on my first nights' visit to Monaco; playground of the rich and famous I painted it from my hotel balcony, overlooking the Principality.
I particularly like the painterly quality of this piece. The Glitz inspired by the Ritz. This painting exhibited at the ELEANOR ETTINGER GALLERY in SOHO, NEW YORK during my first solo NY exhibition, in 2002.

A Non De script Home on Pt. Dume I didn't want to disturb the peace as it was a solemn place, looking kinda run down.

Belly up to the Long Bar: Malibu Inn Bar and Restaurant
Finally, on our journey down to Malibu, our Zeitgeist Safari into John Fante' was still not complete. We were unsuccessful in capturing Fante's phantom on film, at least in any of his other L.A. haunts.
Where was America's Most Famous Unknown Author? Well, knowing that John Fante, spent his last years slowly decomposing; (being taken apart one piece at a time due to debilitating diabetes), we sought the muse in Malibu.
After a cheap lunch ($85.00) at the new Malibu Inn) Robert Eringer saw the other older Malibu Inn, Bar and Restaurant across the street. It appeared to be under construction, looking like a boarded up brothel. Peeping through the papered-up windows I could see a few men inside, laboring to finish before Tuesday's Re-Opening.
Brushing past a workman, standing idle in the doorway, and acting as if I owned the place, I sauntered inside, snapping two photos. My camera; flashing like a lure, caught the eye and immediate ire of the Mexican foreman who began shouting at me.
Apparently, I was trespassing (again). The foreman bolted across the floor shouting at me in Spanglish. He exclaimed that I wasn't suppose to be there! (The thought crossed my mind, wondering where he was from and whether or not he was to be there)
Speaking 'no comprende' (crap), thanked him for his work, (using my best Spanglish), and slipped out the door into the winter rain. Eringer and I schlepped, heading next to Fante's former home on Pt. Dume.
As Eringer sped off, I searched my camera for the orbvious evidence; And that's when I found him. Fante (we feel) showed up for an orb portrait, (or Porbtrait) in a round-a-bout way. In the center of the photo, looking round and transparent, relaxing in the rafters, John's orb made an appearance.
This was a fulfilling moment on our short but happy quest.
According to his son, Dan Fante', John's final years were spent enjoying country western music, whiskey and rose' wine, here at the Malibu Inn, in fact this is where he had his final drink. There was a "feel" of a Western Saloon; with the long bar, Old Fashioned Chandeliers, and Western Wagons wagging from the ceiling.
Eringer and I concurred this is where he took a liking to country and western music; when listening to the many live cowboy bands that would have played there in the 70's and 80's.
Within a couple of days, everything had come together quickly, and nicely for this trip.
Now, on to Fante's former domain.

A Dark Way to End a Surreal Day
We'd done L.A.; Robert Eringer and I, in search of John Fante'. He didn't show up in any of the pictures we took on Skid Row, Downtown L.A., or Hollywood at Musso and Franks.
Finally, on our journey down to Malibu, where America's Most Famous Unknown Author, John Fante, spent his last years slowly decomposing, due to diabetes. We found him waiting; for us at his last and final haunt; the Malibu Inn, Bar and Restaurant.
His final years were spent enjoying country western music, whiskey and rose' wine, according to his son Dan Fante'.
When I took a look inside the Malibu Inn, which was closed and under restoration, I saw what influenced him; a quasi western saloon with a long bar, chandeliers, and western wagons wagging from the ceiling.
Eringer and I deduced this is where he took a liking to country and western music; when hearing one of the many live bands that would play there in the 70's and 80's.
Above the dance floor, front and center, relaxing in the rafters, Dan showed up.
